Ponderosa Pine

Pinus ponderosa

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Evergreen Tree
Plant Family: Pinaceae
Plant Description: This tall evergreen is native to North America and parts of Utah. Some specimens of this large tree can reach as high as 100 feet. Care should be taken in choosing a location for this tree to provide it with plenty of space. Its long green needles grow in clusters of three, occasionally two. The needles twist as they grow out from the cluster. It produces plenty of cones at an average of four inches each. Cinnamon red bark exfoliates in plates.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Tree - Evergreen
Plant Care: Tree - Evergreen (single-stemmed woody plants that keep their leaves during winter): Light pruning is required to maintain desired shape and to avoid branching problems such as double-leader stems. Evergreen trees can be difficult to establish. Adequate winter moisture is critical for the first 2-3 years until the roots establish. If there is a dry winter check the root ball with your finger for moisture before watering. Monitor for pests and diseases.
