Japanese Blood Grass

Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra'

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Ornamental Grass
Plant Family: Poaceae
Plant Description: This ornamental grass originally came to the United States in packing material from Asia. It spreads rapidly in areas with warm winters. The variety 'Rubra' is said to be less aggressive than the species, but can still spread quickly under the right conditions. The red tipped leaf blades are very attractive. This grass rarely flowers or sets seed. It is tolerant of poor soils and drought. Avoid planting in areas where it shouldn't spread.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Ornamental Grass - Small
Plant Care: Ornamental Grass - Small (showy non-turf grasses that go dormant in winter, under 3' tall): Gather dried seed head stalks in one hand and use hand pruners to cut and remove 2/3 of the total grass height. For warm season grasses (more common), this is best done in late winter to early spring. For cool season grasses apply the same maintenance practices in the late fall, once the plant is dormant.
