Lenten Rose

Helleborus orientalis

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Family: Ranunculaceae
Plant Description: A unique clump-forming evergreen perennial that thrives in shade. Beautiful rose-like flowers are among the first to bloom in late-winter and early spring. Bloom color is extremely variable ranging from white to pink to purple. Palmate leaves are shiny dark green. Evergreen in mild winters, but harsh winters may cause the foliage to burn and tatter. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Plant in areas visible in the late winter to take advantage of the bloom.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Perennial - Evergreen
Plant Care: Perennial - Evergreen (soft-stemmed plants that keep their leaves and color during winter): Remove spent blooms to promote rebloom later. To avoid winter stress, wait until spring to identify what portions of the plant are still alive and then remove the rest.
