Jupiter's Beard

Centranthus ruber

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Family: Valerianaceae
Plant Description: Clump forming perennial with starry clusters of crimson-pink flowers that bloom in early summer, with additional sporadic blooms through early fall. Gray green to mid-green leaves are lance-shaped and fleshy. Does well in alkaline and poor soils. May become too large and seed aggressively if the soil is too fertile or it receives too much water. Self-sows freely.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Perennial - Herbaceous
Plant Care: Perennial - Herbaceous (soft-stemmed plants that die back in winter and regrow in spring): Remove spent blooms to promote rebloom later. Some plants tend to flop over after the first bloom and attempt to regrow from the base; in these cases, the old stems can be cut away in summer. As plants become dormant in the fall, remove dead leaves and stems.
