Plant Description: This tall, conical, cone-bearing tree grows more narrow and with denser foliage than the species. This conifer loses its needles in the fall and winter, making it deciduous. The species grows naturally in swampy areas but will tolerate less water and somewhat dry conditions. It prefers acidic soil and should not be planted in soils with a pH higher than 7.5. Attractive light to mid green needles are quite flat and turn a bronze brown in the fall before falling off the tree. The base of the trunk is quite broad, even in youth and may form knobby "knees" in especially wet areas.
