Coccinea Spirea

Spiraea japonica 'Coccinea'

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Shrub
Plant Family: Rosaceae
Plant Description: Upright, compact deciduous shrub with a bushy habit. In summer showy, dark crimson flowers are borne prolifically which attract bees, birds and butterflies. Leaves are deep green on top, grayish-green below and lance-shaped. They prefer full sun and well drained soil. Works great as a border shrub.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Shrub - Hard Pruning
Plant Care: Shrub - Hard Pruning (woody multi-stemmed plants that lose their leaves every winter and look best on one year of new growth): Cut down all branches to the base of the plant every year in the late winter or early spring, leaving a few inches with buds to regrow. Monitor for pests, diseases, or other ailments on a regular basis.
Special Considerations: This particular shrub does not need this hard pruning done every year. It can be done every 2-3 years, or as needed. This will keep it from looking weedy or leggy.
