Oriental Poppy

Papaver orientale

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Family: Papaveraceae
Plant Description: This clump forming herbaceous perennial has large, brilliant orange-red flowers that bloom in late spring to mid-summer. The papery petals form a cup surrounding dark black centers. The light green leaves are hairy and sharply lobed. The leaves go dormant after flowering to help the plant survive late summer drought, then reappear again in the fall.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Perennial - Herbaceous
Plant Care: Perennial - Herbaceous (soft-stemmed plants that die back in winter and regrow in spring): Remove spent blooms to promote rebloom later. Some plants tend to flop over after the first bloom and attempt to regrow from the base; in these cases, the old stems can be cut away in summer. As plants become dormant in the fall, remove dead leaves and stems.
